Emily Capkanis lives and works in New York City. The inspiration for her geometric abstract compositions begins with a color story and the work is then shaped by her fondness of logic and order. After composing her palette, Capkanis allows her intuition to take over, layering paint and defining shapes with strips of tape. The painting reveals itself to her when the tape is peeled away and within each layer, a new painting is created and a new story is told. Reflecting on the element of chance in her process Capkanis says, "All is revealed when I peel off lines of tape. I enjoy the thrill and suspense of what is going to happen. This moment determines the fate of my piece and its fun and exciting to see what happens through chance." Ultimately, through her paintings Capkanis strives to produce harmony and order in a chaotic world.
